What is Melasma?
They are dark-colored spots that appear on the face and are commonly referred to as "chloasma." Melasma is more common in women than in men. Certain factors promote its appearance, including hormonal changes, the use of contraceptives, genetic factors, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
It appears as dark spots on the face, especially on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip. It can affect the superficial layers of the skin, resulting in a light or dark brown color, or deeper layers with a blue-grayish hue.
What solutions are available?
It is crucial to avoid sun exposure, apply sunscreen every 3-4 hours, and wear a hat or cap.
A lamp called Wood's light can be used to highlight the spots and identify their depth. The presentation is very characteristic, so additional studies are usually not required.
There are various products that help reduce pigmentation., such as hydroquinone, arbutin, and kojic acid in combination with retinoids or glycolic acid, which eliminate the superficial layers of the skin. Additionally, therapies such as the intense pulsed light (IPL). or some lasers to optimize results.
